Reaching New Heights
Congratulations to our own Luke Sappington, who passed his International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist exam earlier in June. This certification requires three years of industry experience and demonstrating proficiency in a range of topics from plant physiology to soil science and tree climbing knots.
Luke capped off the month of June with his first go at an ISA climbing competition. He finished in 9th place (out of 70 competitors) at the Rocky Mountain Chapter Tree Climbing Championship held in Denver. These competitions test an arborist’s abilities in tree climbing speed/skills, aerial rescue and other essential skills.
Nice job Luke!
A Sticky Situation
“What’s that sticky sap dripping from my trees?” It’s not sap, it’s honeydew. Honeydew, as it is pleasantly named, is actually the waste excreted by aphids and certain other insects feeding on your trees. Aphid populations in the region are high this year, leading to large amounts of honeydew.
There are many different species of aphids in Colorado that feed on various types of plants. Currently, we’re seeing large populations of aphids on aspens, cottonwoods and spruce, as well as various shrubs and perennials. Aphids are often kept in check by natural predators. However, if the dripping honeydew becomes a nuisance or if host plants are sustaining damage, treatments may be warranted.
